The world is changing rapidly, with new technologies replacing old ways of doing things. For example, people don’t pick up a phone anymore. They speak over the internet. People don’t read books anymore. They hold an electronic devices that contains a whole library. People don’t go as often to brick and mortar stores. They buy items online.

Big business, though, is still done the old fashioned way – face to face. But the venue has shifted. Instead of concluding deals in offices, much business is now carried out on the golf course, at cocktail parties and at over lunch.

There is no more impressive venue for a power lunch than at Baci Ristorante Italiano, on Morena Boulevard. The façade of the restaurant is simple, with only a small door for entry. It is almost like coming into a hidden, private club. But, once inside, one enters a world of class service and dining delights.

Baci Ristorante is a favorite of celebrities as well as business and power brokers. Over its 29 year history, Baci has served many celebrities like Jerry Lewis, Henry Mancini and Anthony Quinn.

A small wooden bar sits to the right of the entrance, complete with a single television for patrons who can’t get away from sports events. Several cozy rooms to the left make up the dining areas. The décor is classically Italian, with the use of color, wood and art objects. A large statue of a male torso looks like it was unearthed at Pompeii. A large enclosed outdoor heated patio, complete with authentic Italian fountain and objects of art, is an excellent locale for small private parties. Everything feels refined and classy.

Servers are impeccably dressed in tuxedos and are truly professional. Some of them have worked at Baci for many years. My wine glass was always full. There was always fresh, warm, delicious bread at the table. Dishes arrived and were discreetly removed after the contents were savored and consumed. It was just perfect.

Tony D’Amato, the owner and host, often greets customers by name. He has gotten to know many of them personally over the years.

The menu is upscale Italian with a French flair. Chef Domenio Alioto prepares amazing dishes that has won the AAA Four Diamond Award to Baci for 12 consecutive years. Baci also has an award winning wine list. The servers are very knowledgeable about wines but Tony D’Amato, the owner, is the real expert.

We began with a special dish, shrimp served on a bed of angel hair pasta, with lobster sauce. It was large and, at our server’s suggestion, was split between us. The lobster sauce was sensational, a “secret recipe” made by reducing lobster shells to extract and enhance the subtle flavor and aroma of the sea. Seafood selections at Baci are outstanding. A small salad that followed by liberally sprinkled with very tasty gorgonzola cheese.

Pasta lovers will relish the variety of dishes offered. Linguine alla Vongole comes topped with a mound of harvest from the ocean. Penne a Quattro Frommagio is rich and satisfying. Veal lovers will enjoy each of the six different way that it is prepared, including the popular Saltinbocca alla Romana, medallions of beef with proscuitto and sage.

Baci Ristorante is the perfect setting for making that important deal – classy, attentive and delicious. A little bit of good food and wine always makes negotiations easier.

Word to the wise: don’t plan to count calories at Baci. This is a gourmet destination to relax and enjoy. Baci Ristorante Ialiano is located at 1955 Moreno Boulevard, which is east of Highway 5 between Clairemont and Balboa. There is a small parking lot and lots of street parking. Prices are high but the quality of cuisine and service is priceless. Call 619-275-2094 for reservations and directions.
